Hollies

Hollies are a classic symbol of the winter season -- dark and handsome in the landscape and cheerful and long-lasting as cut branches in a vase.  Experts count more than 400 species of hollies around the world, native to every continent except Antarctica; there are 20 to 30 native North American species.  Most gardeners think of evergreen hollies first, but deciduous hollies, which hold their bright berries on bare branches through the winter, are important and under-appreciated members of the genus Ilex.  If you choose carefully and plant properly, hollies are undemanding plants that will distinguish your garden for generations.
